Objection

A statement with which you defend yourself against a payment order or an authority's decision, usually within a short deadline.

An objection (Widerspruch) is a legal remedy by which you challenge a decision without suing straight away. Against a court payment order (Mahnbescheid) you file it with the dunning court; the period is two weeks from service (§ 692 Abs. 1 Nr. 3 ZPO (Code of Civil Procedure)), but a later objection is still taken into account as long as the enforcement order (Vollstreckungsbescheid) has not yet been issued (§ 694 Abs. 1 ZPO). Against a decision of an authority, an administrative act, the objection must often be filed within one month of notification (§ 70 VwGO (Code of Administrative Court Procedure)). Against an enforcement order, by contrast, the remedy is an appeal called Einspruch (§ 700 ZPO). Where and by when you can object is stated in the notice of remedies (Rechtsbehelfsbelehrung) in the letter; without such a notice the period can be longer.
