The co-pilot that thinks ahead: the Agents in the lawyer portal are here

Not another chat box waiting for your question — but an AI that reads your case files on its own, flags deadlines and risks, summarises 5,000-page proceedings and rehearses the oral hearing with you. Five agents, one co-pilot inbox, full control. Why this changes how a firm works.

In one sentence

Today’s AI waits until you ask. The new co-pilot in the lawyer portal flips that around: it reads your case files on its own, thinks ahead and drops finished suggestions into your inbox — you decide what runs.

From tool to thinking partner

Every firm knows the pattern: a tool is only as good as the question you put to it. If you don’t know a deadline is ticking in a file, you won’t ask about it.

That’s exactly where the Agents come in. They’re not another input field but a proactive co-pilot: the AI works on your files in the background, recognises what needs doing and speaks up on its own. “Ask me something” becomes “I found something for you.”

That’s the real leap — and why we consider it the biggest change in the lawyer portal since the AI assistant.

The co-pilot inbox: suggestions before you ask

At the heart sits the co-pilot inbox. Here the co-pilot collects what it notices in your files:

  • a deadline buried in an uploaded document and not yet noted anywhere,
  • a contradiction between two briefs,
  • a missing document the file needs to be complete,
  • a summary worth running for a matter that has just grown.

Each suggestion is a one-click start. The sidebar shows a badge with the number of open suggestions — and you decide at your own pace what to run, what can wait and what to dismiss.

Five agents for real firm work

Behind the inbox sit specialised agents. Each is built for a concrete, recurring task:

1. Case scan — the thinking partner

Reads a file in full and tells you what stands out: deadlines, risks, gaps, sensible next steps. No more digging through a hundred pages to find your way in.

2. Case summary XL — even 5,000 pages

Large proceedings blow past any context window. This agent works on the map-reduce principle: it summarises part by part and condenses the parts into an overall picture — without cutting what matters. Even a giant file becomes readable in one pass.

3. Complete the file

Checks whether the file is sound: which documents are missing, which details are open, what still needs to be obtained before things move on.

4. Hearing prep — your moot court

Runs the oral hearing through with you: likely questions from the bench, the strongest attacks from the other side, your best answers. A sparring partner that asks you the uncomfortable questions beforehand.

5. Citation guard

Goes through briefs and drafts and flags references that should be checked — because an invented or outdated citation is a real problem in a brief. The guard points it out; the check stays with you.

There’s also the Counsel (senior counsel): an AI second opinion for the tricky strategic question, when you want an experienced sparring partner.

You stay in control

Proactive doesn’t mean unilateral. By default the co-pilot suggests — it only runs once you agree. Where you want it, agents may run automatically with your approval, e.g. scanning every new file straight away. Every run is traceable in the log: what the agent did, on what basis, with what result. Nothing happens in a black box.

Three pillars that interlock

The agents don’t stand alone. Three pillars now work together in the lawyer portal:

  • AI assistant — the chat where you write, research and build drafts.
  • Agents — the co-pilot that thinks for you.
  • Lex & Lexi — two AI jurists that test your case in debate. (more)

And they hand work to each other: an agent can trigger a Lex & Lexi analysis and pass it the right documents; a Lex & Lexi result moves, on request, into the AI assistant or straight into a brief draft — all checked, all logged.

Built to be safe

  • EU AI: processing runs over European model routes.
  • PII masking: client data is masked automatically before any text reaches a model, and only reinserted for you in the result.
  • Access & audit: each agent only sees the files you have access to; every run is logged.

What it costs

No hidden per-run fees. The agents are part of your firm subscription via quotas: depending on your plan, a certain volume and intensity of agent work is available to you. You see what you use — and don’t pay extra for every single thought your co-pilot has.

Staying honest

The co-pilot is an assistance system, not an organ of the administration of justice. It thinks along; it doesn’t decide. Deadlines, strategy and every brief remain the lawyer’s responsibility — the AI prepares, checks and reminds, but the signature and the liability are yours. That’s exactly what approval, the log and the citation guard are for. More on our guardrails: AI transparency.

Now in the lawyer portal

You’ll find the agents in the lawyer-portal sidebar under Agents — right next to the AI assistant and Lex & Lexi. Not a firm with us yet? For lawyers shows how to get started.
