Sending an inquiry to a law firm

How to submit an inquiry, what the law firm sees, and what happens next.

Updated 28 October 2026

> Status: Referrals to law firms via Smart Legal Pro are currently being planned and are not available at this time. This article describes the planned process. Information on how you can currently find a lawyer yourself and share your documents can be found in Finding a lawyer.

When you contact a law firm, you hand over your matter in a structured manner – not as a loose collection of information.

What the law firm receives

  • Your description and the established facts of the case.
  • The relevant documents that you release.
  • The context, so that the law firm can quickly assess whether and how they can help.

How to proceed

  1. Open the profile of a law firm and start the AI pre-chat to briefly describe your matter.
  2. Initiate an inquiry from this: Specify a topic and a brief summary.
  3. Release the documents that the law firm is permitted to see.
  4. Send the inquiry.

Keeping track of your inquiries

You can view the status of your inquiries under My Inquiries – new, accepted, in progress, completed, or declined. If the law firm replies, you can exchange messages directly there (Tracking my inquiries to law firms).

You decide

You only release what you want to share and retain control over who is allowed to reply. How we handle your data is described in Data Protection & Where Your Data is Stored.
