How we handle your documents
Seven commitments we keep in our code – and the limits we state openly.
Start for free
Anyone entrusting legal documents to software wants to know what happens to them: is everything read? Where is it processed? Who pays if something goes wrong? This page only contains statements our system actually honours today.
Where there are exceptions, they are listed further down – deliberately visible, not in the small print. The legally binding details are set out in the privacy policy, the data processing agreement and the AI transparency page.
Our commitments
What happens to your documents
Reading in full instead of silently cutting
Smart Legal Pro analyses long documents section by section and in full – up to a limit of around 1,200 pages per document. If a document exceeds that, we tell you instead of secretly reading only the beginning.
No silent cut-offs
If an AI answer ends at the length limit or the connection drops, we do not present it as complete: depending on the feature, we continue, visibly mark the answer or refund.
Our error, not your cost
Our principle: if a paid operation fails because of an error on our side or at the AI provider, you do not pay for it – credits are refunded or your quota is not charged.
Processing in the EU, no training
AI requests are routed via Requesty Ltd (UK) with processing in the EU (Frankfurt) and zero-retention configured. Your data is not used to train the models.
You decide what the AI reads
In the lawyer portal, no AI feature reads a document you have excluded from AI – neither chat nor agent nor text recognition. If the exclusion cannot be checked, the document is treated as excluded.
Personal data masked where provided for
In the consumer features, names and identifiers are masked by default before the AI call; in the lawyer portal, the firm controls this via a switch. Scope, exceptions and the measured detection quality are set out in the privacy policy.
Traceable: the AI log
In the AI log you can see for each entry when which feature ran and whether an answer was shortened or refunded – lawyers additionally see the model and the documents read, consumers see it in plain language with the credits, where recorded per entry. Whatever is not recorded is named as a gap.
What we expressly do not claim
- Masking does not detect every piece of personal data. It reduces the risk but does not replace your own check of what you upload.
- A small selection of special models in the lawyer portal stores requests at the model provider for up to 30 days; the zero-retention commitment above does not apply to them. They can only be used once the firm has expressly approved this.
- For text recognition of scanned documents, Mistral AI may be connected directly rather than via Requesty. Location and terms are listed among the sub-processors.
- The AI makes no legally binding decisions. Results are drafts and pointers – professional responsibility remains with a human.
