When two documents don't tell the same story: contradiction detection in the case file

Case analysis in the Anwaltsportal now detects when two documents in the same case file contradict each other — and distinguishes between a correction, a genuine contradiction and a false alarm. With four ways to resolve a conflict, including the one that matters most to defence lawyers: both statements remain on record.

In one sentence

Case analysis in the Anwaltsportal now automatically finds the places where two documents in the same case file give different accounts of the same point — and presents the conflict to you with source references for a decision, instead of quietly letting the more recent document win.

Why contradictions can be the most valuable thing in a case file

Almost every larger case file has them: the contract states a different term than the confirmation letter, the witness statement a different date than the minutes, the invoice a different amount than the default summons. Sometimes that is simply a correction — the later document puts right what the earlier one got wrong. But sometimes it is precisely the point on which a case is won or lost: a genuine contradiction in the other side's submissions, a diverging witness statement, an evidentiary problem. Telling the two apart is a matter of legal judgement — and that is exactly why no software should decide it silently on its own.

How the detection works

The mechanism is deliberately built in two stages. First, deterministic code finds the candidates: same fact type, same subject, different value, different source documents — pure data logic without a language model, which misses nothing in the file that fits this pattern. Only then does a single, bundled AI pass assess the pairs it found: is this a correction, a genuine contradiction — or two statements that don't actually concern the same point at all? In case of doubt, a fixed rule applies: the finding is shown as a contradiction, never quietly filed away. Better a false alarm you dismiss with one click than an overlooked conflict.

Four resolutions instead of two

For every detected conflict, the case graph shows you both values side by side — with links to the source passages in the underlying documents. Four ways to resolve it are available:

  • Statement A stands or statement B stands: the other fact is archived, and the conflict becomes a documented correction.
  • Both remain on record: the option that often decides matters for the defence — both statements stay active, the contradiction is confirmed as such and feeds, with its weight, into later pleading and email drafts. A diverging witness statement is not a typo; it is a question of evidence.
  • No contradiction: a false alarm, dismissed with a single click.

Where to find it

Detection runs automatically with the first case analysis and with every update. The case's analysis overview shows open contradictions as a red number; one click takes you to the detail view in the graph tab, with the value comparison and the supporting references. As with the entire fact graph, the same principle applies: the classification is an AI assessment and groundwork — the legal judgement of what a contradiction means for your case remains yours.
