Chatting with a document
Ask questions directly about your contract or notice – with full document context.
In the chat, you can ask questions directly about a document. The AI has full access to the content and provides answers based precisely on your document.
How to proceed
- Save your document in My documents. An analysis is not necessary for this – if you already have one (Uploading & Analyzing Documents), the chat will use it as well.
- Open the Chat for this document – or select it within the chat itself using the paperclip icon next to the input field. Preview, introductory questions, and further options: Talking to a document.
- Ask your question in your own words – and follow up if necessary.
Typical questions
- "What does clause 7 mean in simple terms?"
- "What deadlines are mentioned in this notice?"
- "What should I look out for before I sign?"
Chat or legal question?
- Chat: quick follow-up questions regarding an already uploaded document.
- Legal question: detailed, independent question about the legal situation with a structured answer (Ask a legal question).
Good to know
- You select the document directly at the input field: with the paperclip icon next to the text field – in an empty chat, also with the "Choose a document" button. If no document is available yet, the same button leads to the upload. Without a selected document, the chat answers in general terms; with a document, it becomes specific.
- Answers are an initial assessment. Before signing far-reaching declarations (e.g., Schuldanerkenntnis [acknowledgment of debt]), obtain a second opinion (Finding a lawyer).
- If the AI is missing evidence, you can provide it during the ongoing conversation – the price is displayed in advance (Adding more documents in the chat).
- Long documents (over about 12 pages) can be read in full by the AI upon request – the price is displayed in advance; with "Detailed" under an answer, you can read more (Talking to a document).
- In very long conversations, the AI only knows older messages as a summary – a note under the answer will inform you of this (Long conversations: What the AI keeps in view).
- Document without readable text: If the selected document does not yet have readable text or an analysis (e.g., because text recognition is still running or has failed), your question will not be sent and not charged – it will remain in the input field. You can then select "Continue without the document" or have the document scanned again under My documents and send the question again afterwards.
- If an answer ends abruptly, continue it with Continue – free of charge if the truncation occurred on our side (Response cut off? Simply continue).
Export conversation
With "Export conversation", you can download the entire conversation – your questions and the answers – as a PDF or Word file (DOCX), for example for your records or to pass on to a law firm. The export is free of charge and marked as AI-generated (note in the document and machine-readable in the file metadata, see AI labeling in file metadata). On a smartphone, you can find the export in the menu at the top right of the chat.
Prefer speaking to typing? → Explaining via voice (Voice). If you have already spoken with Lexi or Lex, the chat can read the summaries of previous voice conversations if you ask about them.
