AI labeling in file metadata
What the invisible AI marking in PDF/DOCX means and why it is mandatory.
When Smart Legal Pro generates a document for you (e.g., a letter, a contract, or an analysis report as a PDF or DOCX), an invisible, machine-readable marking is embedded in it: a note stating that the content was AI-generated.
What the marking is
- It is only in the file metadata (e.g., keywords/subject of the file) – not in the visible text of your document.
- It makes it recognizable to machines that AI was involved – in accordance with the transparency requirements of the EU-AI-Act (Art. 50), which have been in effect since 02.08.2026.
- It does not change the content or layout of your document.
Why it is mandatory
The EU-AI-Act provides for an exception to the labeling obligation in Art. 50 (4) if the content has undergone an editorial review by a person with editorial responsibility before publication. For a document created by you and used independently, this exception generally does not apply – the marking therefore remains permanently activated and cannot be switched off.
Important to know
- The visible labeling in the app and on the results pages remains in place in any case.
- If you hand over a document to a lawyer for further processing, different rules apply there – see the explanation in the lawyer wiki.
