Long conversations: What the AI keeps in view

In very long chats, the AI only knows older messages as a summary – the chat will inform you, and you can restate important details.

The AI cannot process an unlimited amount of text in a single response. If a conversation in the chat becomes very long, the app determines what the AI sees verbatim – and informs you when older content is only available in a condensed form.

What the AI knows verbatim – and what is summarized

  • The latest messages are known to the AI verbatim – currently up to 20 if a document is the basis of the conversation, otherwise up to 40.
  • Older messages are automatically condensed by the app into a summary after a response: who is involved, which jurisdiction applies, facts, dates, amounts, and case file numbers, as well as previous responses and open questions. This summary is included with every subsequent response. Your messages themselves remain readable in the history unchanged.
  • If the summary is exceptionally not yet ready, the AI considers the affected older messages only in a shortened form – some possibly not at all – and the summary will be provided subsequently. Older messages are therefore no longer omitted unnoticed.
  • Documents in the conversation are read by the AI with every response (Chatting with a document, Adding more documents in the chat); they are not affected by the summary.

How to recognize it

If the latest response is based on a summarized history, a subtle note appears below it: "The AI only knows older messages of this conversation as a summary; it knows the last … messages verbatim. Please restate important details if necessary." If the summary is not yet available, it reads: "Older messages of this conversation are only considered in a shortened form here; a summary will be provided subsequently. Please restate important details if necessary." The note remains with the response even after reloading.

What you can do

  • Restate important information – names, amounts, dates, case file numbers that are crucial for your next question. The AI sees whatever is in your current message verbatim.
  • Start a new conversation for a new topic. Topics will not be mixed, and the AI will have full capacity again (Asking good questions).

Costs and data

  • The summary costs you nothing. The app creates it internally; you are charged as usual for every message you send (Where do I see what something costs before I start?).
  • The summary belongs to your conversation: if you delete the conversation, it is deleted as well; it is included in the data export (Exporting My Data (GDPR)). More on how we handle your data: Data Protection & Where Your Data is Stored.
  • Delete conversation: In the conversation history, you can delete a conversation along with all messages. Immediately afterward, you can undo the deletion via "Undo" in the notification – the server keeps a copy for a maximum of 15 minutes for this purpose; after that, the conversation is permanently deleted.

Important

The summary is generated by a machine and may omit details. Please verify crucial statements in the history or in the original document (How reliable is the AI?) – the responses remain an initial assessment (Limits of AI & No Legal Advice).
