How do I adapt and revise a contract?
Select or upload a contract, define your objective, review proposed changes (redline), and finalize as a new version.
Do you have a contract and would like to improve or understand it? Under Adapt contract, the AI reviews your contract, suggests changes as a redline, and provides a clean new version at the end.
Where can I find this?
Open Adapt contract. There, select a contract from your documents or upload a new one. The revision assistant will then open in three steps: Objective → Proposals → Download.
Step 1: Define objective
You determine what should be changed:
- Guided (recommended): The assistant asks you questions and builds a precise briefing from them. Generating these questions is a separate AI service; its price depends on the selected level (Standard is preselected) and is displayed on the button ("Generate questions (...)"). Already paid questions are retained – with "Back to the questions (already paid)" you return to them without additional costs; new questions only incur costs after one question has been answered.
- Quick (free text): You describe your objective yourself in your own words (e.g., "Limit liability in my favor, reduce notice period to 3 months").
Before calculation, you will see a preview of your instruction text and can add additional instructions. You will also see the credit price here – with a choice between Standard and a more thorough Premium level (Where do I see what something costs before I start?). Charges are only applied after your confirmation.
Red flags from the analysis (optional): If the document has already been analyzed, you can select the identified red flags. The AI processes each selected red flag specifically – including the source and recommended measure from the analysis – in addition to your objective. By default, nothing is selected; each selection is included in the price you see before booking. If no analysis is available, the revision is based solely on your instructions.
Step 2: Review proposals
The AI presents a list of proposed changes – each with a justification and, if available, a legal basis. For each proposal, you see the old and the new text. You can select or deselect each proposal and edit the proposed text yourself before accepting it.
Paid proposals are not lost. If you close the assistant before saving a new version, the proposals remain accessible on the contract page under "Contract revisions" (marked as "open") – with "Reopen proposals" you continue from there without new costs. Only a new objective costs credits again; the app will ask for confirmation beforehand.
Step 3: Redline review & new version
In the Download step, you see all selected changes as a redline (change markings). There, you decide for each point: accept, reject, or replace with your own alternative. Upon finalizing, a new, clean version is created, and your decisions are recorded in a decision log.
You can download:
- the redline document (with change markings) as DOCX,
- the final version as DOCX or PDF.
Afterward, you can directly draft a cover letter (Creating legal letters) or hand over the contract to a law firm. How to read the result of a contract review before you adapt it is explained in Reviewing a contract: How to read the results.
What is this useful for?
- Identifying and mitigating risk clauses.
- Adding missing clauses.
- Clarifying incomprehensible language.
Good to know
- For very long contracts, the proposals only refer to the first part – a note will indicate this. The finished document still contains the complete contract; the subsequent part is adopted unchanged.
- If an action fails technically, the credits are automatically refunded (Refunds & Reimbursements).
- The result is an AI revision, not a legal letter. For important contracts, legal review is recommended (Finding a lawyer, Limits of AI & No Legal Advice).
You can create new contracts from templates via Creating contracts.
