General AI Chat or Legal AI? What Matters
Objective comparison of criteria: How a general AI chat differs from Smart Legal Pro when it comes to legal questions – and when which one is appropriate.
"I can just ask an AI chat about that." You certainly can – for a rough overview. For your specific legal matter, it is worth checking a few criteria. This article describes them objectively: on the left, what typically applies to a general AI chat (varies depending on the provider and plan); on the right, what Smart Legal Pro offers in this regard. It is best to check these criteria yourself for every product you use.
1. Does the AI work on your document?
A general AI chat knows your document if you copy or upload it; in the next conversation, you start over, depending on the product. Here, you upload your contract, notice, or letter, and the AI checks exactly that text – using review templates ("playbooks") with sources and review status for risks, clauses, and deadlines (Uploading & Analyzing Documents, What is the AI – and what is it not?). You can then ask questions directly about the document (Chatting with a document) and trace individual evidence back to the specific text passage (Viewing documents (viewer)).
2. Which legal system applies?
Law is country-specific. With a general AI chat, you usually have to specify the country and legal area yourself. Here, the AI aligns itself with the country of your case and answers accordingly (Languages & Countries (Jurisdictions)).
3. Are the facts of the case clarified?
Before the AI provides an assessment, it gathers the facts of your case: it summarizes what it has understood, identifies open points, and asks targeted questions in the event of contradictions (Gathering the facts of the case & follow-up questions). This ensures the assessment is based on clarified facts.
4. How are deadlines handled?
A deadline depends on the country, type of proceeding, and method of service. For every product, check whether a deadline is calculated based on evidence or merely derived from the model's knowledge. Here, deadlines are identified during analysis and collected in one place, with optional reminders (Keeping track of deadlines); a date is only saved if it is in the document or calculated from a verified source.
5. What is the result?
With a chat, the result typically ends in the chat history. Here, the end result is a deliverable: a finished letter or contract as a PDF/DOCX (Creating legal letters, Creating contracts), a concrete action plan (Action-Brief), or a strategy recommendation for the entire case file.
6. Is there a path to a human?
If things get tricky, you can hand over your already prepared case to a law firm with verified admission (Finding a lawyer, How do I hand over my case to a law firm?). Such a handover is typically not part of the feature set of a general AI chat.
7. How are sensitive data handled?
Ask yourself for every product: Where is input processed? Is it used for training? Is there a data processing agreement? Here, your documents are stored encrypted in the EU, personal information is masked before most AI calls as far as it is recognized, and your content is not used to train the models (Is it secure?, What happens to my documents?).
8. Does the AI provide hints on its own?
A general AI chat typically only answers what you ask. Here, the AI may occasionally add a hint on its own if a thought follows from the already reviewed information in your case – transparently, with a source, and rarely enough not to be intrusive.
9. Does it check back for long documents?
If the chat works with one of your documents, it will specifically check back in the document when needed for long texts – and openly shows you this step in the answer's work log ("Double-checking the document"). An already analyzed document is not billed twice: if you upload the same file again, the platform recognizes it by its content and offers to continue using the existing document (My documents).
10. Can you tell the system something?
Some facts are easier to tell than to type. You can describe your matter orally via voice input. Voice functions of other products typically do not know your case file; here, the conversation does not start from scratch but already knows your case file and your documents.
What applies to both – honestly
Even here, a third-party language AI works at the core. It can be wrong (How reliable is the AI?) and does not replace legal advice (Limits of AI & No Legal Advice). Always check results, citations, and deadlines yourself or have them reviewed by a lawyer. The description on this comparison page applies to the product category "general AI chat," not to a specific product; functions and prices of individual providers differ and change (as of October 2026).
When is a general chat sufficient?
For non-binding, general knowledge questions without sensitive documents, a general AI chat may suffice. As soon as it concerns your specific documents, deadlines, or legal steps, the mentioned criteria are important.
