Adding more documents in the chat
If the AI is missing a document, you add it during the ongoing conversation – the price is shown in advance, and the document is read from your next message.
Often you only notice in the middle of a conversation that the AI is missing a document – for example the rental agreement for your question about the termination. Instead of starting a new chat, you add the document to the ongoing conversation.
How to proceed
- At any time via the paperclip next to the input field ("Add a document") or via "Add new mail" in the header of the conversation – there you can select a document from your storage (free of charge) or upload a new one. In addition, if necessary, the AI suggests under an answer under "Other documents that could help" which documents it is still missing (Talking to a document).
- Choose "Upload" and the file: PDF, JPG, PNG or WEBP, at most 5 MB and, for PDFs, at most 10 pages.
- The price in credits is shown in advance. You are only charged once you confirm with "Upload for … credits"; with "Cancel" you discard the file again. If your balance is not enough, the upload cannot be confirmed – top up your credits first (Where do I see what something costs before I start?, Topping up & redeeming credits). If the price changes in the meantime, the app asks you to confirm again.
- After the document has been added, a short confirmation appears in the conversation.
From when the AI reads the document
The AI takes the document into account from your next message. If your last question depended on it, simply ask it again. The next answer is charged like a normal chat message – in addition to adding the document, which you confirmed in advance.
If you add a document in a conversation that does not yet have a document as its basis, it becomes the document of the conversation (Chatting with a document). Every further one is added as an additional document; above the input field you then see under “More documents in this conversation:” which ones the AI also reads.
What the AI does with the document – and what it does not
- It reads the text that the app recognizes in your file. If it relies on the document, it is supposed to name it by its file name.
- It does not read documents excluded from AI use. If you have excluded a document in My documents from AI use, its content stays blocked; the AI is instructed to tell you so instead of guessing at content. You can lift the exclusion in the document list.
- Very long documents (over about 12 pages) are initially read by the AI only at the beginning and it reads specifically as needed; several long documents together share the available space. If you want the AI to know a long document in its entirety, have it read in once – the price is shown in advance, after which it is read in as long as it remains unchanged (Talking to a document). If your question depends on a particular passage, name the section in your message.
- If no text can be recognized in the file (for example with a very poor scan), the AI is supposed to say so and ask you to type in the important passage.
Discussing several documents together
You can also start a conversation with several documents at once: select the documents in My documents and choose “Discuss together” in the bar at the top. Before starting you see:
- which documents are included – documents excluded from AI use and documents in the trash are not included, documents without readable text are marked;
- which one is the main document – it is the focus and you can choose another one; the AI reads the others as additional material;
- what it costs: creating the conversation is free, each question costs the same as any other chat message (Where do I see what something costs before I start?). If your selection contains a long document that has not yet been read in, you will see the price for reading it in before starting and confirm it – without your confirmation, the conversation will not begin. If your balance is not enough, you can create the conversation and top up straight away – afterwards you continue in the conversation.
The AI reads only a limited number of documents per conversation. If your selection exceeds it, the dialog tells you before starting; nothing is silently left out.
Limits and good to know
- The number of additions is limited per conversation and per day; once it is reached, “Upload limit reached for follow-ups.” appears.
- Removing a document from the conversation: use the × next to a document under “More documents in this conversation:” and the AI no longer reads it from your next message. The document stays in My documents; what the AI has already said about it remains in the conversation.
- The bar also shows what the AI is not reading right now – for example a document without readable text, one you have excluded from AI use or one in the trash – each with the reason.
- The AI reads only a limited number of additional documents per conversation. Once it is reached, the app declines a further addition before any price is shown or anything is charged; first remove a document from the conversation.
- If you hand the conversation over to a law firm (How do I hand over my case to a law firm?), only the document of the conversation is currently passed along, not the documents added later.
- The answers remain a first assessment (Limits of AI & No Legal Advice).
