Writing your own documents
Use the editor to draft, format, and save a free-form document as a PDF or Word file.
In addition to analyzing uploaded documents, you can also write your own documents from scratch in the document area — such as a note, a draft, or a simple letter.
How to create a document
In My documents, click "Write a document". An editor with a blank sheet will open. (To upload an existing file, use "Choose file" instead.)
Formatting
The editor works like a modern word processor. Use the toolbar to set:
- Paragraph styles (Normal, Heading 1–3, Subject, Quote) — this is how you make headings larger or smaller; Format painter copies formatting to other text passages.
- Font, font size, line spacing, text color, and highlighter.
- Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethrough, Superscript/Subscript, and links.
- Numbered and bulleted lists, quotes, and horizontal lines.
- Increase/decrease indent (also double indent).
- Tables, images (via file), and text alignment (left/centered/right/justified).
- An interactive ruler (click/drag to indent the paragraph), a header and footer that appear on every page, and footnotes. In the header or footer, use
{page}to insert the page number and{pages}for the total number of pages, for example, "Page {page} of {pages}". - Find & Replace (Ctrl+F) and a word counter.
- Review: Track changes (suggestions in green/red, accept/reject) and comments on specific text passages — in the export dialog, you can choose the final version or visible changes and whether to include comments (default: final version without comments).
- Keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl/⌘ + / shows all shortcuts, including those "like in Word" (for example, Ctrl+Alt+1 for Heading 1, Ctrl+L/E/R/J for alignment). Some shortcuts may be reserved by your browser (e.g., Ctrl+L for the address bar); in that case, use the corresponding button in the toolbar.
The preview in the export dialog shows the PDF in advance. Note: Headers/footers are a line of text with the two page number fields; you will see an elaborately designed Word header/footer in the preview, but it is handled as text in the editor. In the page view, the page number may differ from Word by one page; the exported PDF or Word file is authoritative.
Saving and retrieving
With "Save", your document is stored in your document area — where you can open it again at any time to continue editing. Use "Export" to download it as a PDF or Word (DOCX) file, or open it directly in Word (if installed) using "Open in Word".
A new document is automatically created in your document area a few seconds after your first input; after that, SLP continuously saves your changes. "Save" additionally creates a new version (PDF) that you can name in the version history. If you want to leave a document that has not yet been saved, SLP will ask if you want to save or discard it.
Editing Word files
You can open an uploaded Word file (.docx) in My documents using "Open in the editor (as a copy)" and continue editing it in the editor; your original file remains unchanged. After the first save, SLP will ask if the assistant should only use the new version in the future. Tables, cell colors, text colors, alignment, lists, footnotes, and images are adopted; they are preserved when saving/exporting. If the file contains something the editor cannot display (for example, text boxes or shapes), the editor will mention this in a note beforehand. For pure viewing, SLP displays Word files with layout fidelity (tables, colors, margins).
On your smartphone
On small screens, the editor first opens a highly readable view; use "Quick edit" to change text directly. You can share the finished PDF via your device's share menu.
Writing within a matter
From within a matter, you can create a document that belongs directly to the matter via the "New document" menu; "Back" leads you back there. If you would like to have a draft reviewed by a lawyer, you will find the path to the lawyer search in the editor.
Difference from analysis
This editor is for writing yourself. If you would like to have an existing document reviewed, please upload it instead — see Uploading & Analyzing Documents. If you need a legal letter with AI support, Creating legal letters can help.
You can have texts smoothed, shortened, or formulated more clearly directly in the editor using the AI help in the document editor; with the writing assistant, you can describe in your own words what should be changed in the entire document.
Page view, zoom, menu bar, right-click, search, and printing are explained in In the editor: Sheet view, menu bar, and right-click; table of contents, numbering, references, and checklists in In the editor: Table of contents, numbering, references, and checklist.
