Talking to a document
Preview next to the conversation, starter questions, reading through long documents, adding further documents, and "Detailed" – this is how you work in the document conversation.
New since 27 October 2026Talk to your document – with preview, full reading and “In detail”
Try it nowIn the document conversation, you talk to the figure of your choice (Lex or Lexi) about your specific document – with the document preview right next to it. You do not need an analysis for this.
How to start
- Save the document in My documents.
- Select "Chat with this document" on the document (or select multiple documents and choose "Discuss together"). You can also enter the conversation from an analysis or a letter. You can also select the document in the chat itself: using the paperclip next to the input field or – in an empty chat – with the "Choose a document" button. If no document is available yet, the same button leads to uploading.
- At the top of the conversation, the figure states what it knows about the document and offers starter questions – such as "What is this about?" or "What deadlines are in here?". Clicking on a question only writes it into the input field; it is not sent until you send it yourself.
What the figure reads – and reading through
- Up to about 12 pages, the entire document is available for every answer. This costs nothing extra – each question costs as much as any other chat message (Where do I see what something costs before I start?).
- A longer document is initially only known to the figure at the beginning, and it reads specifically as needed. If you want it to know the entire document, have it read through once: The figure reads the entire document and summarizes it. We offer this before the conversation begins – and, if you add a long document later, as a note in the conversation ("From … [it] only knows the beginning so far"). It remains your decision.
- The price is displayed in the window in advance and is only charged after your confirmation. For scans, it depends on the number of pages because the pages are first read via text recognition. Reading through can take up to two minutes; please keep the window open during this time.
- Once per document: If a document has been read through (or already analyzed), it costs nothing more – as long as it remains unchanged. If the file changes, it will be asked again next time.
- If something goes wrong, the credits are refunded; the note indicates what was refunded. If, in exceptional cases, the refund could not be processed, the path to support is indicated there – we never claim something has been refunded if it has not (Refunds & Reimbursements).
- If your balance is insufficient, the window leads directly to topping up (Topping up & redeeming credits).
The preview
To the right of the conversation (on smaller screens, above the conversation), you can see the document. Use "Preview" to show or hide it; the app remembers your choice.
- If the answer provides a reference, a click on the reference jumps to that spot in the preview and highlights it (The "Source verified" label). If the preview is closed and the screen is large enough, it opens automatically; on small screens, the large window opens instead.
- Multiple documents appear in the preview in a toggle bar.
- Use the icon at the top of the preview to open the same document in the large window (versions, comments, download – Viewing documents (viewer)).
- If the document is deleted or no longer accessible, the preview states this and leads to the storage. If it is excluded from AI usage, you can view it, but the AI does not read it.
Adding further documents and new mail
Use the paperclip next to the input field ("Add a document") and "Add new mail" in the header to attach further documents to the conversation – for example, the opposing party's reply:
- From storage: You select your own documents; adding them costs nothing. A long document can then be read through entirely by the figure (price in advance, as above).
- Upload new: The familiar path with price in advance and its limits (Adding more documents in the chat). The document is then also in your storage. Upload larger files in the storage first and select them afterwards.
- The figure reads added documents starting from your next question. An answer that has already been given does not change by itself.
If a document has been added since the last answer, a line reminds you: "New since my last answer …". With "Update assessment", you ask the question of what changes as a result compared to before – the price is in the button, and it is never recalculated without being asked.
"Detailed"
Below every answer, you will find "Detailed" with the price in front of it. This is a new answer to the same question: longer and structured; the figure is allowed to read through the document more often for this. The first answer remains. A different AI model is not used for this. If the figure has reached its reading limit in an answer, a quiet note appears below it stating that it can continue reading with "Detailed" – this is an offer, not an indication of an error.
Deletion and data protection
- Conversations remain if you delete the document, and can be deleted individually (How do I delete documents – and what is the trash bin?). Quotes from the document may remain in the history.
- The summary created during the reading-through process belongs to the document and is permanently deleted with it.
- Personal data is masked according to your settings before it goes to the AI (Protecting names and details from the AI).
- Example documents are for viewing only – the AI does not answer there.
Good to know
- The answers are an initial assessment, not legal advice (Limits of AI & No Legal Advice).
- Very long conversations are summarized internally – a note below the answer indicates this (Long conversations: What the AI keeps in view).
